Vitamins Smitavins
It is unbelievable to me that every year Americans spend over 7 billion dollars a year on vitamins!
This wouldn't be so surreal if It wasn't for the fact that there is no proof that most of them work, yes some supplements have been provin to be beneficial, but really most studies show the opposite.
Take Vitamin E for instance, for years we have been told that it was a great supplement for the heart, well maybe not anymore!
Here, how does this sit with you
The Johns Hopkins team is scheduled to present its findings at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2004 in New Orleans, La., with simultaneous publication of their study in the Annals of Internal Medicine online Nov. 10.
The study results showed that people taking vitamin E supplements of 400 IU or more per day had an increased risk of death.
"Our study results do not support the use of high-dose vitamin E supplements. If people are taking a multivitamin, they should make sure it contains no more than a low dose of vitamin E," said study lead author and internist Edgar R. Miller III, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "A lot of people take vitamins because they believe it will benefit their health in the long term and prolong life. But our study shows that use of high-dose vitamin E supplements certainly did not prolong life, but was associated with a higher risk of death." taken from http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2004/11_10_04.html
Everyday I see people I work with and family members popping pills, it scares me that these can actually do more harm than good! It doesn't surprise me though, nature, and God are not so simple that we can just extract parts of things and expect them to work the same. What I mean is that we may extract vitamin c from a fruit, but maybe that vitamin C worked so well because the sequence of other vitamins being absorbed from that fruit!
What's my point?
My point is that we should probably stop eating like a bunch of twits and stop spending our money on pills.
Get it from whole foods!
